Keep the Promises Rally

A year ago, our state and city leaders finally made commitments to invest the resources into the classroom that our school children need if we are to succeed in getting the next generation ready for college and the challenging 21st century workforce. These promises are not political campaign promises - they are budgetary commitments that were enacted into public policy. We must keep the commitments that have been made to our children. Our children waited 14 years for the courts and our elected leaders to recognize and fund their constitutional right to a sound, basic education.

In 2006, after 13 years in the Courts, the New York State Court of Appeals affirmed the right of every public school student in New York to the opportunity for a sound basic education and the state’s responsibility to adequately fund this right, but deferred to the Governor and the Legislature to determine the appropriate amount. more >
